Martin Zerfas

Martin Zerfas is the Program Manager for Farm Animal Welfare at Humane Society International (HSI) the international affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States, based in Washington D.C. He works with private and public financial institutions, food companies and inter-governmental bodies on issues related to farm animal welfare. Martin has represented HSI in numerous official consultations and forums, including with the World Bank Group, the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition, the Organisation for Economic Co-Development, the Norwegian Pension Fund Ethics Committee, the UNEP Finance Initiative and the UNEP Principles for Sustainable Insurance. Formerly a lawyer, Martin founded a litigation firm and was lead counsel in dozens of cases in United States Federal Court, specializing in representing whistleblowers of fraud against the government. He was also an attorney at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, working on commercial litigation, including anti-trust and white-collar criminal matters. Martin received a B.A. from Connecticut College and a J.D. from the William & Mary School of Law.
