The first session of our webinar series with the Rainforest Foundation Norway will take place on December 11 at 10am EST.  The webinar will provide an overview of the vital importance of the Amazon  to the global carbon and water cycles, and the need to protect the rainforest – particularly indigenous territories and protected areas – in order to achieve the Paris climate targets.  The webinar will also address current threats to the Amazon, including deforestation, degradation and forest fires.  Our speaker will be Dr. Carmen Josse, Executive Director, Fundacion EcoCiencia and co-author of the studyThe role of forest conversion, degradation, and disturbance in the carbon dynamics of Amazon indigenous territories and protected areas .” A key finding of this study is that 47% of carbon loss in the  Amazon has occurred due to land degradation as a result of commercial activities, and not only deforestation as is commonly assumed.
